GRADUATION BOWL




        Graduation 2020 deserves special attention.

Turning a gift for graduating students who have lost all the traditional markings of class gatherings, proms, awards ceremonies, and even marching to Pomp and Circumstance, requires a specific image statement.  The Graduation Bowl begins with the square of the mortorboard cap turned down at corners by social distance,  teleclass technology, drive by graduation parade, and unemployment.  Within the container for self resolution, creative expression, social service, and economic accountability graduates have already demonstrated ability to engage the future from the changing present. 

This bowl is a basic flat square tray with simple bowl shape easily turned using elementary skills.  Risking slight variations to "cut the air" and undercut the curve demonstrates the challenge to learn new application.  Graduates have opened new ways to learn, engaged in collective and creative projects,  demonstrated open expression of grief and hope, and promoted avenues of social change. 



The turning skills used in creating this bowl are the basic building blocks for endless opportunities to shape and design items that will represent and promote creative change in culture and community.   Graduation 2020 celebrates the resilience learned, integrity displayed, creativity engaged, and intention directed to responsible contribution to a changing world. 



Some graduates for whom this bowl is designed have a strong Christian faith experience.  For these graduates the bowl has significant representation that embodies the square as the Four Gospels embracing the sacramental cup.  The curved edges of the square meld into a loaf shape form of the sacrificial host. 
Graduation is both an ending and a beginning, a passage from dependent child to self responsible young adult.  This is the spiritual journey transition from nurtured offspring to invited disciple.  Learning with a purpose.  Living with a challenge.  Loving with compassion.  Listening with a knowing of the unknown,

Corona Bowl Adventure from Launch to Bending the Curve.

A MOMENT OF HESITATION at the launch of the six pound Dutch Elm block.  From that instant the Corona Bowl took on a life of unintended consequence and unexpected significance.  Initially a statement of design to capture the threat of a spreading virus, I selected a half round section of a long standing deceased Dutch Elm that was being cut and sized for firewood.  The victim of a fast spreading invasion of virus like infection that wiped out the species in New England during the 1960-90's, this block had both the center pith and the bark markings of the attacking virus and microscopic organisms that spread it throughout the cadmium layer of growth cells under the bark.  The spaulted grey tones of decay were also evidence of the living presence in the long standing sentinel resisting removal from its original appointed location guarding the park pond shoreline and providing shade to wildflowers and home to birds.  Years ago an Oriole built a nest in the leafless...
